
When a lobby, a boardroom or a control room needs a large screen, the choice usually comes down to two constructions: an LED screen assembled from modules, and a video wall built from separate LCD panels. From the outside the task is the same — a big picture on the wall — but they are built differently, and the differences show up not in the spec sheet but in daily use.
We make LED screens and do not sell LCD video walls, so let us state our position up front: what follows is a comparison of technologies, not an attempt to talk you out of anything. There are places where a panel video wall does the job, and we say so.
Two different constructions
An LCD video wall is several finished panels in a common frame. Each panel is self-contained: its own matrix, its own backlight, its own fixed resolution. The wall is assembled as a 2×2, 3×3 or 4×2 grid — from rectangles of one size.
An LED screen is a single canvas. It is built from modules of 320×160, 250×250, 256×256 or 192×192 mm, or from cabinets of 640×640, 500×1000 or 960×960 mm. Neither a module nor a cabinet is a screen in itself: resolution and proportions appear only once the whole canvas is assembled.
Almost everything else follows from that difference.
Seams
On an LCD video wall there is always a bezel between panels. It is made thin, but it cannot be removed physically: the matrix has an edge, the backlight has an edge, and a line remains between two panels. On a photograph or a map that line runs across the image, and the eye keeps coming back to it.
An LED screen has no seam. Module joins module at the pixel pitch: the next LED sits the same 2.5 or 3 mm from the previous one as inside the module. A canvas of 6 or 100 m² stays continuous.
If the screen shows sources split into windows — cameras, dashboards, four channels in a 2×2 grid — the seams barely get in the way: the window borders are there anyway. If the picture is a single one across the whole area — a city map, a network diagram, a clip, a panorama — the grid becomes a visible problem.
Brightness and working in sunlight
Indoor LED models give from 350–550 cd/m² on P2.5 and P4 up to 900–1,000 cd/m² on the P1.95, P2.6 and P2.9 cabinets. Outdoor models work in the 5,500–7,800 cd/m² range with IP68 protection and temperatures from −40 to +50 °C; media facades go up to 6,000 nits.
That is the main dividing line. A video wall of panels is a solution for a room with controlled light. A full-height glazed wall, an atrium with a rooflight, a building entrance, a facade, a square — that is LED territory: there you need brightness in the thousands of candelas and a sealed housing, not a panel bezel.
In a control room the situation is reversed: there brightness is not raised but lowered. The screen is kept at 30–40 % — people look at it for a whole shift, and it must not dazzle.
Size and shape
A panel video wall is built from rectangles of one size. The size of the wall is the grid step multiplied by the number of panels, and there are no values in between.
An LED canvas is assembled to fit the opening. Cabinets of 500×1000 mm give any size that is a multiple of 0.5 m; modules of 320×160 and 250×250 mm fit the canvas more precisely. Beyond that comes what a grid of rectangles cannot do at all:
- Flexible modules of 320×160 mm bend to a radius and hold on magnets — a column, a wave, a rounded corner, the inner radius of a niche.
- Transparent mesh at P2.6 × 5.2 and P3.91 × 7.82 passes 65–70 % of the light and hangs on glazing: the shop window stays a shop window, and the weight is 7.5 kg per 1000×1000 mm cabinet.
- Non-standard proportions. An 8 × 1 m ribbon above a stage or a narrow vertical screen by an entrance are built from the same modules as an ordinary 16:9 screen.
If the wall is flat, rectangular and fits the panel grid, this advantage does not come into play. If the opening is curved, round or of an awkward proportion, there is essentially no choice.
Pixel pitch and viewing distance
On an LCD panel the resolution is set by the matrix: you get as many pixels as the panel has, and density only rises as the diagonal shrinks.
On an LED screen density is chosen through the pixel pitch, and area separately. P0.93 gives 1,137,778 dots per m² and can be viewed from a metre, P1.53 gives 422,500 dots and is comfortable from 2 m, P2.6 gives 147,456 dots from 3 m, P3.91 gives 65,536 dots from 4 m. A screen for a particular distance is built exactly as it needs to be, with no overpaying for density that cannot be seen from there anyway.
An honest caveat: on a small area and viewed up close, a panel video wall usually wins on price for pixel density. The smaller the screen and the closer the viewer, the stronger the case for LCD; the larger the area and the further the viewer, the faster that advantage disappears.
Service life and round-the-clock operation
Our LED models are rated at 100,000 hours for outdoor cabinets, transparent mesh and P0.93, and 50,000 hours for media facades. A hundred thousand hours is about eleven years of continuous operation, and that is exactly why LED goes where the screen is never switched off.
For panels with a constant backlight and a static picture on screen, round-the-clock operation is a separate conversation with the manufacturer: fixed interface elements sitting in one place for days and the backlight degrading over time both work against that scenario. An LED canvas is indifferent to static content, and running at 30–40 % brightness only extends its life.
Maintenance and replacing an element
On a video wall the unit of replacement is the panel. If it fails, the whole thing is replaced, and the new one has to match its neighbours in colour and model.
On an LED screen the unit of replacement is a module or a power supply. A module comes off the front on magnets in a minute, and the screen can therefore sit flush to the wall or in a niche — no rear access needed. The warranty is 2–5 years depending on the model, spare modules are held in stock in Almaty, and the state of the screen is visible remotely: temperature, cards, what the canvas is showing right now. The control room is the main contested case
A situation centre is the one place where both technologies genuinely compete. There really are a lot of windows here, the viewer sits close, and the screen runs around the clock.
Our answer is set out in the Control rooms and situation centres section: pitch P1.25–P1.86, operators two to four metres away, brightness at 30–40 %, a multi-window video processor with layout presets and redundant power and signal. We have built such centres for the Dubai Police command centre — 48 m² at P0.93 pitch — and for the ENOC situation centre, 20 m² at P1.53. In Kazakhstan screens of the same kind are installed at the Border Academy of the NSC and in the National Security Committee building in Taraz.
The practical rule is simple. If separate windows live on the wall permanently and nobody ever expands a map to the full area, the seams are tolerable and a panel video wall will do the job. If a single picture across the whole canvas is needed at least occasionally, if operators sit in front of the wall for whole shifts, and if the centre is planned for ten years rather than three, a continuous LED canvas at a fine pitch justifies the difference in price.
